On Thursday, Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, traveled to Hangzhou, Eastern China, as part of his effort to create stronger ties between Germany and China economically via collaborations with both Chinese government officials and German representatives from industry. Before flying to Hangzhou Merz was in Beijing where he met with Chinese officials.

In addition to his meetings with Government officials, he is also meeting with a number of major manufacturers in Hangzhou including Siemens Energy, a European manufacturer focused on Energy Technology, and Unitree Robotics, a robotics manufacturer who specializes in developing and building advanced bipedal robots.

Hangzhou has played an important role in the technological advancement of China through (by) having housed most of China’s largest Technology Companies including (for example) DeepSeek (an Artificial Intelligence start-up) and Alibaba (one of the world’s largest Retailers). In conclusion, Merz’s visit to China further demonstrates Germany’s commitment to developing a collaborative relationship with China in the field(s) of Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Renewable Energy.

Merz, including senior company leaders from all three major German car makers, were present at the meeting to emphasize how much of an important market China represents for German automobile manufacturers. Before leaving Beijing, Chancellor Merz visited the production facility of Mercedes Benz and additionally conducted a conduction testing of a vehicle that drives itself as part of their continued commitment to developing intelligent mobility options and investing within those markets.

The timing of this visit also coincided with increased tension regarding global trade, particularly between the U.S. and China and concern about potential tariffs imposed by the United States, and that both Berlin and Beijing want to work closer together economically in order to produce benefits for both economies in spite of possible geopolitical tensions and competitive factors in certain industries.
