As a result of the new policy from the Chinese foreign ministry, UK and Canadian citizens will now have the option of visa free travel to mainland China, for up to 30 days, starting on 17 February 2024. The visa-free travel can be used for tourism, business travel and visiting family members or friends; and will continue until 31 December.
According to The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, this agreement will “promote” the further enhancement of people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries; this further supports China’s commitment to reopening to international travellers following years of restrictions due to COVID-19.
“This will enable British companies to expand their business operations Throughout China, which is one of the largest markets on earth”. Sir Keir Starmer stated, while on his visit, that British companies have “beenbegging” for ways to grow their presence in all areas across China.
“We made some really good progress on tariffs for whisky,on visa-free travel to China and on information exchange and co-operation on irregular migration,focusing particularly on small boats and engine parts.”- Sir Keir Startmer
Specifically, under the new regulations, UK and Canadian citizens will receive visa- exempt status for travel to China, along with approximately 50 othercountries including France,Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan that currently enjoy visa-free entry.
According to the UK’ s Office for National Statistics, approximately 620,000 London residents traveled to China in 2024. With the newpolicy in place, hundreds of thousands more may now be able to travel without obtaining a visa, simplifying and accelerating the process.This also coincides with the first official visit by a British Prime Minister to China since Theresa May’ s trip in 2018.
While renewed engagement with China has raised concerns among some observers regarding human rights protections and national security in the context of closer UK-China relations, the current visa waiver policy nevertheless signals growing economic and cultural engagement between China and Western nations.
